Message from Society Chairman Jim Robinson

I’d like to ask if there are any budding Society Committee Members out there !
As reported in this month’s Newsletter two of our members stood down (which means we now have 10 on the Committee) and we are keen to replace them as soon as possible. I would have a chat with any ‘prospective candidates’ (!) and all going well they would be co-opted onto the Committee and if things go to plan, become a fully fledged member at next years AGM. Easy.

And finally, if any of you or indeed if you know of anyone, who enjoys helping to compile Newsletters and dealing with communications generally but might not want to be a Committee member, then please get in touch. I guess it’s a sort of PR role, for the want of a better term !

So, that’s my recruitment drive complete, for now !
I’m on 07824 310508 or email me at:

All the very best as always.

Welcome to the Addingham Civic Society Website

We were established in 1978 and from a relatively small membership quickly grew to 260 in 1987 and over the following years continued to grow to the point that our membership now stands at 410 (March 2021). This figure represents over 10% of the total population of our village. We are a Registered Charity and currently have a board of 11 Trustees which includes 4 Officers consisting of a Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer. We meet monthly to conduct Society business.Within our structure the Society has a number of sub committees who are able to focus and specialise on a range of activities and projects. Finance, Planning, Heritage and our Environment Group are 4 such examples. We have very close links with the many Organisations and Clubs in the Village and we work closely with Bradford Council, the Parish Council, our Member of Parliament and other external bodies. It is not coincidental that one of our important objectives is to work with, support and promote the many other village organisations.

The Society is an active member of Civic Voice (the National Body representing Civic Societies) which replaced the Civic Trust in 2010. This organisation represents over 300 societies around the country. We are also a member of the Yorkshire & Humberside Association of Civic Societies (YHACS), which is the regional body representing 38 member Societies. Our Chairman, Jim Robinson, is a Trustee of YHACS and our Secretary, Gill Battarbee a Trustee of Civic Voice.

Civic Voice

Civic VoiceThe Civic Movement is based on a network of hundreds of voluntary Civic and Amenity Societies across England and is one of the largest Social movements in the Country. The very first Civic Society was established in the 1840’s. Civic Voice is the national charity for the Civic Movement in England. They aim to make places where people live more attractive, enjoyable and distinctive. They actively promote Civic Pride and want to build stronger, more active and more engaged Communities across the whole of the Country.

Yorkshire and Humberside Association of Civic Societies (YHACS)

YHACSYHACS on the other hand is a regional organisation of 38 Societies and was established in 1999 to act as a representative and support organisation for Civic and amenity societies across the region. Its' focus is on helping to improve the built and natural environments through good design, architecture and planning whilst at the same time respecting our heritage.
